Science of FTL Drives
I don't know about you, but I am certain, I will NOT be the first person to jump into a Black Hole to check if wormholes actually exist. That is the reason, I was excited by Dr. Miguel Alcubierre's seminal paper on FTL travel, and then later with Dr. Chris Van Den Broeck’s modification of it to lower the energy requirements. For anyone interested, I have written a summery of these concepts and placed it at "http://members.cox.net/carlpaulson/documents/ftl.htm". The advantages of Dr Albubierre's concept are: it allows faster than light travel; there is no relativistic mass increase or time dilation; on-board spaceship clocks run at the same speed as the clocks of external observers; and the spaceship is always traveling on a geodesic, therefore, the occupants will feel no inertial forces, regardless of the motion of the ship. The disadvantages are, the metric violates all 3 energy conditions (weak, dominant and strong) and requires enormous amounts of negative mass-energy (exotic matter) to power. Dr. Van Den Broeck’s modification of the concept lowered the energy requirements to minute amounts by maintaining the volume of the warp bubble but decreasing its surface area. Shads of Dr. Who and the TARDIS. It has the same advantages as the original but somewhat different disadvantages the most dramatic of them being that due to the smallness of the exterior (smaller that the wavelength of visible light) of the bubble, one would not be able to see out or control. The important item is that these concepts are entirely possible and legitimate in today's Physics.

As observers and investigators, what characteristics would indicate an object has the ability for FTL travel? Would the object appear at multiple locations at the same time or would the object be visable at all? What detection methods could be used?

Hi Carl,
I see you've chosen my favorite topic to blog, thank you buddy! FYI, I'm an another fan of UFOs and have tried to find a method for FTL propulsion. I've presented a framework stating the wormholes are possible to build. For example, see this:
http://www.centauri-dreams.org/?p=561
or this:
http://extremetechnology.blogspot.com/2006/03/macroscopic-tranversable-spacewarp.html
, but they are old news. My newest paper is about controlling gravity by laser, which I thought you might like to know about. This is a post on that:

Maybe it's a good idea for you to write another post about it!
Cheers,
MM
